Reducing our carbon footprint is good for CEMEX and also
good for the communities in which we operate. In addition,
during 2013, we again expanded the range and intensity of
our community engagement. A leading example is our flag-
ship
Patrimonio Hoy
program that supplied affordable build-
ing materials and services, along with more than US$250
million in microcredit, to help more than 420,000 families
realize their dream of home ownership. In fact, since 1998,
more than 2.3 million people have benefited from our
inclusive businesses—one measure of our commitment to
be a good neighbor in the communities we serve.
In the same spirit, we continue to play an active role in
our employees’ personal and professional development.
From our global leadership and management programs
to our scholarships and online training courses, we foster
our employees’ growth at each stage of their careers.
Of course, nothing is more important than the health
With decades of experience delivering tailor-made solu-
tions for projects in developed and developing econo-
mies—from tunnels in North America and high-speed rail
lines in Europe to highways in Asia and affordable housing
in Central and South America—we are ideally positioned
to be one of the key suppliers of the coming urban boom.
That is why we are putting so much emphasis on design-
ing and developing a growing array of innovative specialty
products that offer customers superior durability, lower
life-cycle costs, and greater energy efficiency. It is also
why we are aggressively evolving from being a supplier
of construction materials to a provider of comprehensive
building solutions of value-added products and services
for infrastructure and housing.
I believe that is a roadmap for an increasingly profitable
and valuable CEMEX.

and safety of our employees. Although we have not yet
reached our target of zero workplace accidents, we made
steady progress during 2013 on our commitment to
provide the safest possible working environment for our
employees and our neighbors.
Indeed, the hard work and dedication of each of CEMEX’s
43,000 employees significantly contributed to our
progress in 2013. Their passion and dedication is the
cornerstone of my conviction that we are on track to
deliver sustainable value to you, our stockholders, over
the coming years.
Finally, I want to emphasize the amazing opportunity I see
ahead for CEMEX. Population experts expect the world’s
urban population to nearly double to more than 6 billion
over the next four decades. The result will be a dramatic
increase in demand for housing and infrastructure.
