Electron Beam Recorder (EBR)
—Aiming to Enable Higher Density, Larger Capacity Disks
Pioneer has been developing an electron beam recorder (EBR) for realizing next-generation
optical and magnetic disk masters. The EBR employs an electron beam column as a
light source to fabricate a finer pattern than conventional laser beam recorders using
ultraviolet (UV) and deep-UV lasers. Furthermore, Pioneer has advanced research by
participating in related Japanese national projects*.
In fiscal 2005, Pioneer commercialized an EBR capable of recording 50 gigabits
per square inch. In fiscal 2007, we developed a new EBR that realized a recording
density equivalent to 500 gigabits per square inch by developing even finer patterning
processes and more stable recording technology. Plans call for commercializing this
EBR going forward.
The markets have high expectations for EBRs because of the indispensable role
they will play in realizing high-density, large-capacity next-generation optical disk and
magnetic disk media. Looking ahead, Pioneer will continue to conduct R&D activities
focused on realizing even higher-density disk media, with the aim of increasing
recording density to over 1 terabit (1,000 gigabits) per square inch.

Ultra-high Resolution Plasma Displays
—Opening Up New Possibilities for Plasma Displays Through Cutting-edge
Technologies
Pioneer has successfully developed an ultra-high resolution plasma display that
reduces pixels to 40% of the size used in the current generation of 50-inch, 1080p
high-definition plasma displays. This breakthrough enabled us to unveil an 18-inch
in Research and Development
Recognizing that research and development (R&D) is vital to its future growth, Pioneer is constantly working to create
new forms of value so that the Company remains at the forefront of the times.
In this section, we highlight technologies used to develop new products with the aim of establishing new markets,
as well as R&D initiatives that now offer stronger prospects for commercial viability.
