10 OLYMPUS 2011
I am certain that the Imaging Systems Business will
be profitable. In order to realize this profitability, we are
carrying out significant restructuring activities, including
reversing our increasing cost base, and also by appoint-
ing a strong manager, who has achieved outstanding
results in Europe, to lead the Imaging Systems Business
within the Americas.
In April 2011, there was an unprecedented level of
sales of our spring-summer model compact digital
cameras in Europe. In Japan, sales of the OLYMPUS
PEN series interchangeable lens-type digital camera
were encouraging, with its excellent performance
equivalent to that of digital single-lens reflex (SLR)
cameras. Continuing our drastic cost reduction efforts,
we will also develop a strong sales structure capable
of increasing the sales volume and achieving a turn-
around in the performance of this business.
What is your outlook for the
Information & Communication Business?

Information & Communication Business, in our scope
of consolidation as a wholly owned subsidiary. Although
there is some debate over how Olympus can add value
to this business, we will continue to focus efforts in this
area as it contributes to the Companys profitability.
What about the Life Science and
Industrial Systems Business?
A: We have appointed a new global president to
reinforce this business.
Particularly in the life science field, we will focus on
the development of high-value-added microscopes.
Leveraging Olympuss technological assets and market
position, there is opportunity to further grow this busi-
ness. In addition to biological microscopes in the life
