In Memoriam
We mourn the loss of two of our colleagues and friends:
Howard R. Young
Ray joined the firm in 1946 and w as the first Harvard M BA
to join G oldm an Sachs in a sales position. A fter several
successful years covering our im portant clients, he becam e
head of the Securities Sales D ivision, a predecessor of
the Equities D ivision, and helped transform it dram atically.
Ray was named a general partner in 1958 and served on
the M anagem ent Com m ittee from the tim e of its inception
in 1961, until he becam e a lim ited partner in 1980 and
most recently a senior director of the firm . R ay w as an
ex traordinary individual with a passion for our business
and people; he will be greatly missed.
Arthur G. Altschul
After joining the firm as a general partner in 1959, A rthur
played a k ey role in the establishment and developm ent of
the Investment M anagem ent Services D epartm ent. He
becam e a lim ited partner in 1977 and served in that role
until 1999. A rthur w as a com m itted partner of the firm and
a distinguished philanthropist and art collector. H e w ill be
remem bered for his generosity, thoughtful judgm ent and
com m itm ent to our firm s culture.
