Copperandgoldsalestotaled1.46billionpoundsofcopper
andarecord2.8millionouncesofgoldin2005,compared
withsalesof1.0billionpoundsofcopperand1.4million
ouncesofgoldin2004.
Millthroughput,whichvariesdependingonoretypes
beingprocessed,averaged216,200metrictonsoforein2005,
comparedwith185,100metrictonsoforein2004.Following
thefourth-quarter2003Grasbergopen-pitslippageand
debrisflowevents,weacceleratedtheremovalofoverburden
andminedlow-gradeorepriortorestoringsafeaccessto
higher-gradeoreareasinthesecondquarterof2004and
resumingnormalmillingratesinJune2004.Asaresult,mill
throughputwaslowerin2004.Millrateswillvaryduring2006
dependingonoretypesminedandareexpectedtoaverage
inexcessof220,000metrictonsoforeperdayfortheyear.

Copperoregradesaveraged1.13percentin2005,compared
with0.87percentin2004,andcopperrecoveryrateswere
89.2percent,comparedwith88.6percentfor2004.In2005,
goldoregradesaveraged1.65gramspermetricton(g/t),
comparedwith0.88g/tin2004,andgoldrecoveryrates
averaged83.1percentin2005,comparedwith81.8percent
in2004.The2005gradesreflectthereturntonormalmining
operationsatGrasberg,includingaccessinghigher-grade
materialinaccordancewithourmineplan.Copperandgold
oregradesareprojectedtobelowerin2006whencompared
withthe2005oregradesbecauseofminesequencing.
ProductionfromtheDeepOreZone(DOZ)underground
mineaveraged42,000metrictonsoforeperdayin2005,
representing19percentofmillthroughputasitcontinuedto
performabovedesigncapacityof35,000metrictonsofore
perday.PTFreeportIndonesiaisexpandingthecapacityof
theDOZundergroundoperationtoasustainedrateof50,000
metrictonsperdaywiththeinstallationofasecondcrusher
andadditionalventilation,expectedtobecompletein2007.
PTFreeportIndonesia’sshareofcapitalexpenditures
fortheDOZexpansiontotaledapproximately$16millionin
2005andisexpectedtoapproximate$37millionthrough
theprojected2007ramp-up,withapproximately$16million
estimatedfor2006.TheDOZmine,ablockcaveoperation,
isoneoftheworld’slargestundergroundmines.
