Loans and Advances to Banks
Credit exposures to banks for the most part arise in the course of providing services to customers or trading in capital markets for profit. They may
be reciprocal in nature.
The majority of loans and advances to banks are placings, amounting to £56.5bn at 31st December 2003 (2002: £48.1bn), and include reverse repo
transactions. Also included are loans to banks and building societies, interbank settlement accounts and federal funds sold. Loans and advances to
banks increased by 6% to £61.9bn at 31st December 2003 (2002: £58.3bn).
The amounts shown in the tables below are before deductions of provisions and interest in suspense.
