Buildingcapabilityanddevelopingleaders
Thegroupchiefexecutiveandeachmemberoftheexecutiveteamheld
reviewmeetingstoensurearigorousandconsistenttalentandsuccession
processisfollowedforallgroupleadershiproles.
Wecontinuetoworktoembedappropriateleadershipbehaviours
throughoutourorganization.In2010,wepilotedanewgroupleader
developmentprogrammewithleadersintheUS.Allgroupleaderswillbe
expectedtoparticipateintheprogrammefrom2011onwards.
Ourgroup-widesuiteofmanagementdevelopmentprogrammes,
ManagingEssentials,hasnowrunin42countries,withmorethan21,000
participants.Thisincludesnewmodulesintroducedin2010,suchasa
mandatoryD&Itrainingprogrammeforleadersthathashadover3,000
participantssofar.
Managingandrewardingperformance
Weareconductingafundamentalreviewofhowthegroupincentivizes
businessperformance,includingrewardstrategy,withtheaimof
encouragingexcellenceinsafety,complianceandoperationalrisk
management.Thisreviewiscloselylinkedtotherefreshofourvaluesand
behavioursandtoourworkinembeddingleadershipbehavioursthroughout
thegroup.Weexpecttodeliverarevisedindividualperformance
managementframeworkin2011.
Inthenalquarterof2010,individualperformancebonuseswere
basedsolelyontheachievementofsafetytargets.
Weencourageemployeeshareownership.Forexample,through
theShareMatchplanruninaround60countries,wematchBPshares
purchasedbyouremployees.
Diversityandinclusion
Diversityandinclusion(D&I)involvesacknowledging,valuingandleveraging
oursimilaritiesanddifferencesforbusinesssuccess,andiscentraltoour
employeeprocessesinBP.Thegroupchiefexecutivechairstheglobal
D&Icouncil,whichissupportedbyaNorthAmericanregionalcounciland
segmentcouncils.EachofourbusinesseshasaD&Iplanagainstwhich
progressismeasured.WearealsoincorporatingdetailedD&Ianalysis
intotalentreviews,withprocessestoidentifyactionswhereanyissues
arefound.
Wecontinuetoincreasethenumberoflocalleadersandemployees
inouroperationssothattheyreectthecommunitiesinwhichweoperate.
Forexample,inAzerbaijan,nationalemployeesnowmakeuparound88%
ofBP’steam.By2020,morethanhalfouroperationsareexpectedtobein
non-OECDcountriesandweseethisasanopportunitytodevelopanew
generationofexpertsandskilledemployees.
Attheendof2010,14%ofourtop482groupleaderswerefemale
and19%camefromcountriesotherthantheUKandtheUS.Whenwe
startedtrackingthecompositionofourgroupleadershipin2000,these
percentageswere9%and14%respectively.
Weaimtoensureequalopportunityinrecruitment,career
development,promotion,trainingandrewardforallemployees,including
thosewithdisabilities.Whereexistingemployeesbecomedisabled,our
policyistoprovidecontinuingemploymentandtrainingwhereverpracticable.
Employeeengagement
Atourannualleadershipforuminlate2010,ourgroupchiefexecutiveand
otherseniorleadersreinforcedBP’scommitmenttoachievingexcellencein
safety,complianceandriskmanagement.Executiveteammembershold
regulartownhallsandwebcaststocommunicatewithouremployees
aroundtheworld.
Teammeetingsandone-to-onemeetingsarethecoreofour
employeeengagement,complementedbyformalprocessesthrough
workscouncilsinpartsofEurope.Thesecommunications,alongwith
trainingprogrammes,aredesignedtocontributetoemployeedevelopment
andmotivationbyraisingawarenessofnancial,economic,ethical,social
andenvironmentalfactorsaffectingourperformance.
Thegroupseekstomaintainconstructiverelationshipswith
labourunions.
Our2010employeesurveywasdelayedtoallowfororganizationalchanges
tobereectedinthesurveyconstruction,withthesurveyexpectedtobe
carriedoutinthethirdquarterof2011.
Thecodeofconduct
Wehaveacodeofconductdesignedtoensurethatallemployeescomply
withlegalrequirementsandourownstandards.ThecodedeneswhatBP
expectsofitspeopleinkeyareassuchassafety,workplacebehaviour,
briberyandcorruptionandnancialintegrity.Ouremployeeconcerns
programme,OpenTalk,enablesemployeestoraisequestions,receive
guidanceonthecodeofconductandreportsuspectedbreachesof
complianceorotherconcerns.Thenumberofcasesraisedthrough
OpenTalkin2010was742,comparedwith874in2009.
IntheUS,formerUSdistrictcourtjudgeStanleySporkinactsasan
ombudsperson.Employeesandcontractorscancontacthimcondentially
toreportanysuspectedbreachofcompliance,ethicsorthecodeof
conduct,includingsafetyconcerns.Wetakestepstoidentifyandcorrect
areasofnon-complianceandtakedisciplinaryactionwhereappropriate.In
2010,552dismissalswerereportedbyBP’sbusinessesfornon-adherence
tothecodeofconductorunethicalbehaviourcomparedto524in2009.
Thisnumberexcludesdismissalsofstaffemployedatourretailservice
stationsitesformoreminorincidents.
BPcontinuestoapplyapolicythatthegroupwillnotparticipate
directlyinpartypoliticalactivityormakeanypoliticalcontributions,whether
incashorinkind.Wereviewemployees’rightstopoliticalactivityineach
countrywhereweoperate.Forexample,intheUS,BPfacilitatesstaff
participationinthepoliticalprocessbyprovidingstaffsupporttoensureBP
employeepoliticalactioncommitteecontributionsarepubliclydisclosed
andcomplywiththelaw.
Socialandcommunityissues
Westrivetomakeourimpactonsocietyandcommunitiesapositiveone
byrunningouroperationsresponsiblyandbyinvestingincommunitiesin
waysthatbenetbothlocalpopulationsandBP.
Managingourimpact
WebelieveeachBPprojecthasthepotentialtobenetlocalcommunities
bycreatingjobs,taxrevenuesandopportunitiesforlocalsuppliers.A
positiveimpactalsomeansmakingsurethathumanrightsarerespected,
thatweengageopenlywithpeoplewhocouldbeaffectedbyourprojects
andthatlocalculturalheritageispreserved.
OurOMSlaysoutthestepsandsafeguardswebelieveare
necessarytomaintainsociallyresponsibleoperationsatourprojects
andoperations.
Formajornewprojects,projectsinnewlocationsandthosethat
couldaffectaninternationallyprotectedarea,detailedgrouppractices
apply.Theseincludeguidanceonhowtheprojectshouldgoabout
identifyinggroupsthatcouldbeaffectedbytheproject,consultingwith
themtounderstandtheirneedsandconcernsandcarryingoutanimpact
assessmenttoevaluatethepotentialnegativeandpositivecommunity
impacts.Theseareoftencarriedoutalongwithassessmentsofhealth,
safety,environmentalandotherimpacts.
Followingtheimpactassessment,wereviewtheprojectplanswith
aviewtoavoiding,mitigatingorminimizinganynegativeimpacts,suchas
noise,odourorotherformsofcommunitydisturbance,andmakingthe
mostofpositiveimpacts.
Socio-economicinvestments
Weinvestindevelopmentprogrammesthatwebelievewillcreatea
meaningfulandsustainableimpact–onethatisrelevanttolocalneeds,
alignedwithBP’sbusinessandundertakeninpartnershipwithlocal
organizations.Theprogrammeswesupportfallintothreebroadcategories:
buildingbusinessskills,supportingeducationandothercommunityneeds
andsharingtechnicalexpertisewithlocalgovernments.
