OPERATING EXPENSES INCREASED 6% FROM 2013
In 2014, operating expenses of $12,457 million increased $694 million or 6% from 2013 on capacity growth
of 7.8%. The unfavourable impact of a weaker Canadian dollar on foreign currency denominated operating
expenses (mainly U.S. dollars) in 2014, when compared to 2013, increased operating expenses by approximately
$397 million. Refer to section 12 “Financial Instruments and Risk Management” of this MD&A for information
on Air Canada’s foreign exchange risk management strategy. In 2013, Air Canada recorded an operating expense
reduction of $82 million in Benefit plan amendments and impairment charges amounting to $30 million in
Depreciation, amortization and impairment expense.
