LEADERSHiP
Radio – Slow Evolution
After nearly 50 years of AM radio, the 1970s saw the advent and growing
popularity of FM, which introduced stereo sound to the radio dial. However,
there have been no major technological advances in radio over the subsequent
three decades. Radio has remained relatively unchanged while television has
evolved from color TV to cable, DBS and now WebTV. The music industry has
evolved from LPs to cassettes to CDs, while even the telephone continues its
rapid evolution from dial, to touch-tone, to pagers, to go-anywhere cell devices.
XM – The Next Generation
Now, finally, the next generation of radio is here: XM is happening! Like other
communications advances, XM leverages proven digital technology –
advanced satellites and chipsets – to take radio to a whole new generation.
XM is powerfully positioned for success as one of only two companies with a
license for this new national audio service. And, rather than displacing existing
radio, satellite radio will appear as a new third band on the dial, next to AM and FM.
Strength in Strategic Partnerships
Our powerful strategic and equity partners are leaders in their respective
industries. These notable companies are also applying their considerable
technical, marketing and customer service expertise to helping XM
commercialize our business. General Motors, the largest U.S. auto and truck
manufacturer; DIRECTV, the nation’s largest distributor of multi-channel digital
video programming; Clear Channel, the largest radio station operator; and
American Mobile, a leading provider of integrated terrestrial and satellite
digital mobile communications services.
Meeting Consumer Needs
Most important, XM’s new technology meets the needs of today’s consumers,
who are demanding greater choice and control, more convenience and
portability, higher quality audio and greater value. XM delivers it all:
Up to 100 channels covering the full spectrum of formats, including
music, news, sports, talk and information, ethnic programming and
children’s entertainment.
• Coast-to-coast reception in car, home and portable radios – allowing listeners
to take their favorite stations and personalities with them wherever they go.
Crystal-clear digital sound and reliable reception.
All this convenience, choice and quality for a subscription fee of
under $10 a month.
