28 2014 AARP ANNUAL REPORT
MICHELLE OBAMA
The current and a former
First Lady represented both
ends of the boomer-era
spectrum. To show off the fun
side of turning 50, First Lady
Michelle Obama tweeted a
picture of herself with her new
AARP card on January 17—
garnering 600 million media
impressions.
LAURA BUSH
Former First Lady Laura Bush,
a leading-edge boomer born
in 1946, trended nationwide
on Twitter with her daughter,
Barbara Pierce Bush, during
AARP’s Life@50+ event in
Boston on May 4.
BEATLES’ ANNIVERSARY
Fifty years to the minute after
the Beatles played their first
North American concert on
February 11, 1964, a stomp-
ing, cheering crowd enjoyed
an authentic recreation of the
show at the former Washing-
ton (D.C.) Coliseum. AARP
sponsored the event, which
featured Beatlemania Now.
BIRTHDAY GREETINGS
A host of celebrities were wel-
comed to age 50 with surprise
chalk-art birthday greetings
(such as for actor Rob Lowe) in
high-traffic pedestrian areas in
New York City. Adam Duritz of
the Counting Crows and many
others received mock covers of
AARP The Magazine.
HAVING FUN AT 50+
Having fun is important for people at every age, so surprise and
delight were big parts of Boomers@50+.
