SOCIAL IMPACT: AARP FOUNDATION TAX-AIDE
>In 2014, Tax-Aide volunteers helped 2.6 million people navigate complicated tax
codes, ensure proper credits and deductions and file their federal, state and local
tax returns electronically.
>While avoiding the cost of professional tax preparation services, clients received
$1.3 billion in income tax refunds and more than $257 million in Earned Income
Tax Credits, which assist low-income people who work.
>Since 1968, Tax-Aide has grown from four volunteers to become the nation’s larg-
est free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service.

HELPING 2.6 MILLION PEOPLE FILE TAXES—
FREE OF CHARGE
Tax time used to be stressful for Gloria Chou, a retired school
guidance director from Shoreline, Washington, until she learned
about a neighbor-helping-neighbor program.
Her tax forms could be prepared and filed
free of charge by volunteers for Tax-Aide,
a program offered by AARP Foundation,
a tax-exempt public charity affliiated
with AARP.
“I just don’t trust my calculations,” Chou,
82, told the AARP Bulletin. “I always feel so
grateful for the generosity and kindness of
these people who volunteer.”
Tax-Aide volunteers are trained and
IRS-certified each year to ensure they know
about and understand the latest changes
and additions to the U.S. Tax Code.
In Indiana, an alert Tax-Aide volunteer
saved a newly retired couple $10,000 after
noticing they had neglected to show they
had transferred—not sold—a particular
investment. This commitment to neighbors
helping neighbors is the bedrock of AARP’s
many volunteer programs.
