Q: How will this new vehicle be distributed?
A: We’re producing it in a new, local manufacturing
facility in Jaipur, India. It will be distributed through
small, standalone dealers that carry a very small
inventory with high turnover, so there’s low overhead.
We’re starting in mainly Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities with
a small number of independent dealers and a few
company-owned stores. Over the next few years, we’ll
expand to have network coverage throughout India.
Q: What’s the market potential?
A: This could eventually become our highest-volume
single product line because of the size of the market.
India and other emerging markets are a huge
opportunity for Polaris. With this new vehicle, we’re
starting to tap into the potential.
Q: Where are the international growth
opportunities?
A: While there are growth opportunities across all our
businesses, the big fish is the On-Road Vehicle market.
To help put it in perspective, the long-term On-Road
market is more than 100 times larger than the O-
Road Vehicle (ORV) market.
Q: How are you tapping the On-Road potential?
A: Our Motorcycle business continues to make inroads,
but the big news for emerging markets is the joint
venture we have with Eicher Motors Limited, a leading
commercial vehicle and motorcycle manufacturer in
India. We jointly developed a personal utility vehicle
that will provide some unique solutions for micro
enterprises in rural India to fill both their professional
and personal needs.
Q: What are micro enterprises using today and how
is the personal utility vehicle an improvement?
A: Some micro enterprises use motorcycles, which
don’t have much storage capacity. Some use
3-wheelers. Some use small commercial trucks. But
these customers can’t aord multiple vehicles, and
they also want to put the family in it on the weekend to
go to town, so they don’t want it looking too industrial.
Ournew vehicle will serve these multiple purposes.
