PTFreeportIndonesiareportedrecord-lowaverageunitnet
cashproductioncostsofanetcreditof$(0.02)perpound
in2003,comparedwith$0.08perpoundin2002.Unitsite
productionanddeliverycostsin2003averaged$0.48per
poundofcopper,$0.12perpoundhigherthanthe$0.36in
2002primarilybecauseoflowercoppersalesvolumes.Higher
minemaintenancecosts,strongerIndonesianandAustralian
currenciesandhigherenergycostsalsoresultedinhigher
costscomparedwith2002.
Goldcreditsfor2003of$0.70perpoundwerehigher
thanthegoldcreditsof$0.48perpoundin2002primarily
becauseofhighergoldsalesvolumesandpricesin2003.Gold
oregradesfor2003improvedby24percentto1.54gramsper
metrictonin2003from1.24gramspermetrictonin2002.
Asaresultofthelowercopperproductionandsalesin2003,
PTFreeportIndonesia’sdepreciationrateperpoundofcopper
increasedto$0.15for2003comparedwith$0.14for2002.
PT Freeport Indonesia Sales Outlook
PTFreeportIndonesiasellsitscopperconcentratesprimarily
underlong-termsalesagreementsdenominatedinU.S.
dollars,mostlytocompaniesinAsiaandEuropeandtointer-
nationaltradingcompanies.PTFreeportIndonesia’sshareof
salesfor2005isprojectedtoapproximate1.5billionpounds
ofcopperand2.9millionouncesofgold,andtoaverage
1.36billionpoundsofcopperand2.2millionouncesofgold
annuallyoverthenextfiveyears(2005-2009).PTFreeport
Indonesiaexpectsitssalesforthefirstquarterof2005
toapproximate310millionpoundsofcopperand520,000
ouncesofgold.Also,basedonthecurrentmineplanfor
2005,PTFreeportIndonesiaestimatesapproximately54
percentofitscopperand60percentofitsgoldwillbe
producedinthesecondhalfof2005.Becauseofthenature
oftheGrasbergorebody,thesequencinginminingwill
causeoregradestovaryfromquartertoquarter,particularly
forgold.
PTFreeportIndonesiahaslong-termcontractstoprovide
approximately60percentofAtlanticCopper’scopperconcen-
traterequirementsatmarketpricesandnearlyallof
PTSmelting’scopperconcentraterequirements.Underthe
PTSmeltingcontract,forthefirst15yearsofPTSmelting’s
operationsbeginningDecember1998,thetreatmentand
refiningchargesonthemajorityoftheconcentratePTFreeport
Indonesiaprovideswillnotfallbelowspecifiedminimum
rates,subjecttorenegotiationin2008.Theratewas$0.23
perpoundduringtheperiodfromthecommencementof
PTSmelting’soperationsin1998untilApril2004,whenit
declinedtoaminimumof$0.21perpound.Marketrates,
excludingpriceparticipation,underlong-termcontracts
settledinlate2004approximate$0.21perpound.
Exploration and Reserves
During2004,netadditionsandrevisionstotheaggregate
provenandprobablereservesattheGrasbergminingcomplex
totaledapproximately141millionmetrictonsoforerepre-
sentingincreasesof2.9billionrecoverablepoundsofcopper,
2.2millionrecoverableouncesofgoldand18.9million
recoverableouncesofsilver.Theadditionswereprimarilythe
resultofpositivedrillingresultsattheDeepMillLevelZone
orebody,a146-million-metric-tonorebody.Weexpectto
completeadditionalengineeringstudiesevaluatingdrilling
resultsonthewesternsideoftheorebodyin2005,
whichcouldincreasethesizeoftheorebody.Ouraggregate
explorationbudgetfor2005,includingRioTinto’sshare,is
expectedtototalapproximately$21million($15millionfor
ourshare)withmostoftheeffortfocusedontestingthe
MillLevelZoneandDeepMillLevelZonedepositstothe
northwest,expansionoftheundergroundGrasbergresource,
andtestingreconnaissancetargetsalongtheWanagonand
Idenbergfaulttrends.NetofRioTinto’sshare,PTFreeport
Indonesia’sshareofprovenandprobablerecoverablereserves
asofDecember31,2004,was40.5billionpoundsofcopper,
46.5millionouncesofgoldand124.5millionouncesof
silver.FCX’sequityinterestinprovenandprobablerecov-
erablereservesasofDecember31,2004,was36.7billion
poundsofcopper,42.1millionouncesofgoldand112.8
millionouncesofsilver(seeNote13of“NotestoConsolidated
FinancialStatements”).PTFreeportIndonesia’sshareof
reserveadditionsreplacedapproximately175percentofits
2004copperproduction,90percentof2004goldproduction
and330percentof2004silverproduction.Estimatedrecov-
erablereserveswereassessedusingacopperpriceof$0.85
perpoundandagoldpriceof$270perounce.Ifweadjusted
metalpricesusedinourreserveestimatestotheapproxi-
mateaverageLondonspotpricesforthepastthreeyears
($0.94perpoundofcopperand$361perounceofgold),
theadditionstoprovenandprobablereserveswouldnotbe
materialtoreportedreserves.
TheIndonesiangovernmentpreviouslyapprovedsuspen-
sionsofourfieldexplorationactivitiesoutsideofour
currentminingoperationsarea,whichhavebeeninsuspen-
sioninrecentyearsduetosafetyandsecurityissues
andregulatoryuncertaintyrelatingtoapossibleconflict
betweenourminingandexplorationrightsincertainforest
areasandanIndonesianForestrylawenactedin1999
prohibitingopen-pitmininginforestpreservationareas.The
