EnvironmentalManagementSystembasedonrequire-
mentsoftheISO(InternationalStandardization
Organization)14001standard.PTFreeportIndonesia
wasrecertifiedinaccordancewithISO14001,which
isaninternationalstandardthatprovidesforeffective
environmentalmanagement.
Inlate2004,theEnvironmental
ManagementSystemsatAtlanticCopper’soperations
inHuelvawereauditedbytheSpanishAssociationfor
StandardizationandCertification,inaccordancewiththe
ISO14001:96internationalcertificationstandardsand
theEuropeanUnionEnvironmental,Eco-Managementand
Eco-AuditingRegulationNo.761/2001.AtlanticCopper
receivedpositiveresultsfromtheaudits,whichare
requiredannuallytoretaintheISO14001certification
thatAtlanticCopperfirstachievedin1999.
InFebruary2003,AtlanticCopperandtheAndalusian
RegionalGovernmententeredintoaVoluntaryAgreement
forSustainableDevelopmentthatestablishesaplan
forAtlanticCoppertoachievecompliancewiththenew
EuropeanUnionrequirementsoftheIntegratedPollution
PreventionandControlProgram.Theagreementestablishes
AtlanticCopperasaleaderwithinitssectorinstriving
toimplementthisprogram,whichisrequiredofallindus-
triesintheEuropeanUnionbyOctober30,2007.All
environmentalprojectsenvisagedintheVoluntary
Agreementfor2003and2004wereimplementedby
AtlanticCopperaccordingtoplan.
TheDoñanaFoundation21,inconjunctionwiththe
AndalusianRegionalEnvironmentMinistry,awarded
AtlanticCopperthe“PremioDoñana21”prizeforits
“strongsocialandenvironmentalcommitment,whichhas
entailedasubstantialinvestmentintheenvironment
andthespreadingofamodelofsustainabilityacross
Andalusiathatisnowareferencepointforotherindus-
triesintheregion.”
Freeport-McMoRanCopper&GoldInc.madesubstantial
progressinitssafetyrecordduring2004.TheCompany’s
lost-timeinjuryrateper200,000hoursworkedfor
2004,includingAtlanticCopper,was0.18,asubstantial
improvementwhencomparedtothe2003rateof0.34.
ThisrecordalsocomparesfavorablytotheU.S.metallic
miningindustryaveragerateof2.10in2003(thelatest
yearavailable).Thetotalreportablerate(allreportable
injuries)for2004fortheCompanywas0.46,againasub-
stantialimprovementcomparedtothe2003rateof0.65.
ThisalsocomparesfavorablywiththeU.S.averagetotal
reportablerateof3.39in2003.
