Flying under the power of Pratt &
Whitney’s F135 propulsion system,
theF-35BLightningIIpreparesto
make its first ever vertical landing
on the deck of the USS Wasp.
The historic landing marked the
beginning of a successful three-
week sea trial. The F135 propulsion
system has proved to be the most
advanced, capable fifth-generation
fighter engine for the F-35B aircraft.
About the cover: A prime example
of innovation is found in Pratt &
Whitney’s new PurePower PW1000G
engine family. Scheduled to enter
service in 2013, it is expected to
reduce fuel burn by up to 16 percent,
nitrogen oxide emissions by half
and airport ground noise by up to
75 percent. It also is expected to
generate an annual cost savings
of up to $1.5 million per aircraft
per year compared to comparable
engines currently in service.
