8Annual Report 2009
To Our Stakeholders
As the newly appointed president, I would like to take this opportunity to greet OKI’s many
stakeholders.
Today’s global economy is undergoing a period of unprecedented volatility and change.
With the process of economic globalization proceeding apace, Japan’s economy is certainly
no exception in being swept up by this volatility. Whatever the circumstances of each indivi-
dual era, however, the never-ending stream of customer demands continues to generate a
wealth of new business opportunities. Looking back on the Company’s history, ever true to
its enterprising spirit, OKI had its beginnings as Japan’s first domestic manufacturer of tele-
phones. Since then, we have continued to take the lead in communications technology and
infrastructure development by responding to the ever-changing needs of society at all times.
In the late 1960s, OKI has stood at the forefront of technology innovation in tune with rapid
advances in computer technology, bringing to market a succession of innovative online ter-
minal systems. With the increasingly widespread use of computers, and growing demand
for paper output, OKI then leveraged its capabilities in printing technology development to
cultivate the domestic and global dot impact printer markets. Today, OKI boasts a broad
product lineup encompassing unique LED monochrome and color printers and a customer
base spanning all corners of the globe.
Adhering to its “customer-first” philosophy, OKI will work tirelessly to provide superior
products and services that consistently surpass market expectations, placing considerable
emphasis on delivering customer peace of mind, as it strives for the highest quality. With
this in mind, OKI is continuing companywide efforts to integrate sales and marketing, tech-
nology development, production and maintenance platforms. With a history that now spans
128 years, OKI will uphold its long-standing tradition as a company defined by its integrity
and reliability while seeking the next challenge in its ongoing development and growth.
By steadily implementing initiatives to revamp its business structure, OKI aims to become
a leading company characterized by superior growth.
Performance in the Fiscal Year Ended March 31, 2009
Looking back at the state of the global economy during the fiscal year under review, the
bankruptcy of a major American securities firm in September 2008 sparked a financial crisis
that has reached global proportions, causing a rapid deterioration of economic conditions.
The simultaneous global recession is due to a slowing and stagnating of the real economy
that includes falling stock and real estate prices, slumping consumer spending and significant
reductions in corporate capital expenditures. All of these factors have served to undermine
employment conditions.
Amid the drastic changes occurring in this operating environment, the OKI Group has under-
taken measures to revamp its business structure that is capable of generating stable earnings.
Utilizing one of OKI’s basic strategies—Accelerate Business Selection and Concentration—
the Group has proactively shifted toward reducing operations of and withdrawing from low-
profit businesses, and shifting the resources to stable and growing businesses. Through these
measures, OKI has significantly improved its profitability despite reductions in net sales. More-
over, in October 2008, OKI spun-off of its semiconductor business through a company split
to establish OKI SEMICONDUCTOR CO., LTD., in which 95% of its shares were transferred
to ROHM CO., LTD. Through these actions, the OKI Group has developed a new structure
that pivots on the Group’s core competencies—the info-telecom convergence business and
the mechatronics business, which focuses on ATMs, printers, and others.
