Supporting our communities and working with regional leaders
is central to how we conduct business. In 2004, we made a major
investment in downtown Springfield by moving our WMECO
headquarters to Springfield Technical Community College’s
Technology Park at a time when the city was facing a financial
crisis. Ensuring Western Massachusetts’ urban centers continued
stability is vital to a successful economic climate and enhanced
quality of life, and we are proud to demonstrate our commitment
to the region now and for the future.
Our ambitious economic development outreach stepped up in
2004 with the launch of the Northeast Utilities-led “Discover
New England for Business” program. This joint effort of six New
England states puts our region front and center with companies
and the consultants who advise them on where best to locate
newoffices and factories. NU’s initiative burnishes New
England’s image nationwide and overseas to attract investments
and jobs.
In downtown Hartford, Connecticut, at the Kinsella Elementary
School, wearehelping students succeed in a unique way that may
develop new leaders for our region. A $500,000 NU Foundation
grant has enabled development of a valuable enrichment
program called PEAC — Parental Involvement, Etiquette
Enrichment, Academic Enrichment and Character Development.
The program, a partnership with the Hartford school system, the
city and Southend Community Services, includes NU employees
mentoring PEAC students. It is just one of countless examples
of a long tradition of building partnerships to help our communities
and our region.

REGIONAL LEADERS
Working together, these businesspartners brought WMECO’s
headquarters to downtown Springfield’s Technology Park to
enhance one of New England’s turnaround urban centers.
