ENHANCING GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS — ANNUAL REVIEW 2013MARKETS & PERSPECTIVES —
According to the IATA March 2014 update, airlines returned
an estimated net prot of US$ 12.9 billion in 2013 (2012:
US$ 6.1billion). North American carriers ended 2013 with a
collective net prot of US$ 6.8 billion (2012: US$ 2.3billion),
with Asia-Pacic carriers posting US$ 3.0 billion prot
(2012:US$ 2.7billion) and European airlines an estimated
US$ 1.2billion after breaking even the previous year.
According to IATA, passenger markets continue to outperform
the cargo business.
Looking to 2014, IATA forecasts a 5.8% increase in passenger
trafc (RPK), with trafc up 2.7% in North America, 4.7% in
Europe, 7.4% in Asia-Pacic and 13.0% in the Middle East.
IATA predicted further improvement in the industry’s net prot
to US$ 18.7 billion in 2014, with all regions seeing increases
in protability. In 2014, airlines are expected to post net prot of
US$ 8.6 billion in North America, US$ 3.7 billion in Asia-Pacic
and US$ 3.1 billion in Europe.
ROBUST MID-TERM OUTLOOK
According to the IATA Airline Industry Forecast 2013-2017,
published in December 2013, demand is expected to expand
by an average 5.4% compound annual growth rate between
2013 and 2017.
The Airbus 2013 Global Market Forecast estimates that
passenger trafc will grow at an average yearly rate of 4.7% over
the next twenty years. In order to meet the demand for growth
and for replacement of aging aircraft, Airbus calculates a need
for more than 28,000 new passenger aircraft up to 2032.
