To continue this progress, PSEG is voluntarily targeting an
18 percent reduction in its carbon dioxide emissions rate
from 2000 levels by 2009. PSEG has been actively working to
develop a well-documented, corporate-wide greenhouse gas
inventory, while participating with the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and other stakeholders to establish
strong, verifiable accounting practices for greenhouse gas
emissions reductions.
PSEG promotes cleaner air through many initiatives. In 2004, the
company installed advanced selective catalytic reduction (SCR)
technology at the Mercer generating station in New Jersey
to achieve substantial reductions in nitrogen oxide emissions.
During the summer months of 2004, this technology removed
more than 1,800 tons of nitrogen oxide from the atmosphere—
resulting in cleaner air for the region.
The company is also hard at work to remove the legacy
of an earlier period of industrial activity at sites where gas
had once been manufactured from coal. In 2004, PSEG
successfully completed the clean up and restoration of the
former Princeton Gas Works. The project enabled the town

MORE THAN A DECADE AGO WHEN PSEG JOINED THE FEDERAL
GOVERNMENT’S CLIMATE CHALLENGE PROGRAM AND COMMITTED
TO STABILIZE ITS CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS AT 1990 LEVELS BY
THE YEAR 2000. PSEG ACHIEVED THIS GOAL WHILE GENERATING
ALMOST TWO MILLION MORE MEGAWATT-HOURS OF ELECTRICITY
IN 2000 THAN IN 1990.
