1998 Annual Report
While always mindful of our need to
defend and increase our regional market share
by adding new “in-fill” stores, obtaining the num-
ber one market share in any of our markets is
not Harris Teeter’s primary objective. We do,
however, strive to be the dominant grocery
retailer in our specific neighborhoods. Our
extensive consumer and demographic analysis
identifies sites in neighborhoods with a signifi-
cant enough density of potential Harris Teeter
shoppers to make an opening attractive. Harris
Teeter will continue to extend its geographic
reach in fiscal 1999 with store openings in
northern Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida,
our sixth state.
bottom line, while still maintaining the high
levels of service, cleanliness, product variety and
freshness for which we are so well known.
In the stores, better and faster systems capi-
talize on the improved data generated by the
VIC card and provide merchandising manage-
ment with greater information for category
management and to market more effectively
and personally to customers. In the deli/bak-
ery/prepared foods area, Harris Teeter is
experimenting with a variety of very specific
strategies to reduce costs while maintaining
superior quality. In addition, we continue to
experiment with the size, shape and layout of
these departments in order to make them
more responsive to our customers’ needs.
