1998 Annual Report
Fred Morganthall
President of Harris Teeter
What were Harris Teeter’s most
noteworthy accomplishments during
fiscal 1998?
At Harris Teeter, we consider ourselves
to be nothing less than passionate about
caring for our customer. We also believe
that our focus on providing the best cus-
tomer service has had a significant impact
on sales. We think that thoroughly training
every one of our associates and making
Harris Teeter a great place to work are the
best ways to make them superior customer
service representatives.
We made progress in a variety of initia-
tives this year but we were particularly
proud of our same store sales growth.
We were the leader of those companies
with which we compete and one of the
top performers nationwide. We believe
this growth was due to a number of our
successful promotional, merchandising and
advertising activities, including customer
acceptance and use of the VIC card and the
special programs associated with it.
Consumers depend on Harris
Teeter supermarkets for gro-
ceries and for other convenient
services that make their lives
easier – from fresh, take-home
meals and in-store cafes to
banking and pharmacy services.
