Exelon 2014 Summary Annual Report
| 15
Under the leadership of Exelon Utilities CEO Denis P. O’Brien,
BGE, ComEd and PECO have made great strides to improve
safety, reliability and customer service by identifying,
collaborating on and implementing innovations and best
practices across their respective transmission and
distribution networks.
As a result of the ongoing collaboration between our utilities,
Exelon’s utilities were ranked second, third and fourth among
their 24 peer utilities. And in safety – the single most important
area of focus for Exelon – all of our utilities, for the first time,
ranked in the top decile.
These results were largely the result of implementation of the
Exelon Management Model, a rigorous and analytical approach
designed to drive operational excellence at all of Exelon’s
utilities across 44 system-wide core functional areas. To cite
just two examples:
Eorts to standardize equipment across the utilities have
resulted in significant savings and value. These include
adoption of cable injection technology at BGE, creating
a common approach for underground cable designs and
standardization of overhead distribution hardware. The
companies have also worked together on a multitude of joint
research eorts with our strategic technology partners, which
include the Electric Power Research Institute, the National
Electric Energy, Testing and Research and Application Center,
and Toshiba International Corporation.
The expanded use of social media and customer self-service
options has led to improved customer satisfaction. The oerings
developed were based on lessons learned at each utility and
industry benchmarking.
Looking ahead, the combination of Exelon and Pepco Holdings,
Inc. (PHI) will bring together Exelon’s BGE, ComEd and PECO
and PHI’s three electric and gas utilities – Atlantic City Electric,
Delmarva Power and Potomac Electric Power – giving the
company a strong presence in the mid-Atlantic and northern
Illinois regions. We anticipate completing this merger in the
second or third quarter of 2015.
Following are highlights of each utility’s successes in 2014.
Investment in new metering technology is already helping prevent millions of
customer outages across Exelon’s service territories.
