While the spills have never posed a health or safety problem, they have done
great damage to the publics confidence in our operations. We have taken
full responsibility for our actions, and made full disclosure. We are taking all
necessary steps to clean up the contamination. I reiterate what I have said
publicly many times before – if we truly aspire to be the best electric and gas
company in the country, we must be committed not just to environmental
compliance, but environmental leadership.
Sir Winston Churchill said it best: “Difficulties mastered are opportunities
won. Difficult though they may be, the challenges we face offer great oppor-
tunity once mastered. They will advance our Vision, promote competition, and
further the interests of our customers and the fortunes of our shareholders.
We have an exceptional generation business, one well positioned to respond to
increasing environmental challenges, and with a demonstrated ability to make
money in changing markets. We are determined to build upon that business.
We have stable and improving delivery affiliates, with strong commitments
to the communities they serve, and the customers who live there. We are
determined to make them better.
We have a strong balance sheet and the financial discipline to sustain us
in good times and bad.
We have the management talent and employees to keep the lights on and
continuously improve our operating performance even as we confront the
challenges of Illinois and New Jersey.
We have a sound Vision – we know what it takes to be the very best, and
we work at getting there each and every day.
