NEW STRATEGY FOR DIGITAL CAMERAS The digital camera market is driven by intense
competition for ever higher levels of resolution. Although demand in 1999 centered on
the 2-million-pixel class, attention has shifted to 3-million-pixel models in 2000. In
February 2000, Casio introduced the QV-3000EX with 3.34-million-pixel resolution
for photographic quality approaching that of conventional photographs.
In addition to developing competitive digital cameras, we are pursuing alliances to
create new aspects for the digital imaging business. Casio has tied up with U.S. venture
companies FotoNation Inc., a provider of digital photography connectivity software;
and Zing.com, which offers free services to share, manage, store and print pictures on-
line; to develop a co-branded web site service combined with an Internet camera to be
developed by Casio. This new business was unveiled in January 2000 at the Consumer
Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The service aims to be the world’s first to allow
the direct uploading of images. Users will be able to send images taken by Casios
Internet camera, currently under development, to the co-branded Zing web site using a
built-in “click-free technology developed by FotoNation. Without having to use a PC,
users will be able to efficiently send images over the Internet, and with free storage ser-
vices, edit photo albums and print images.
ENTERING THE DIGITAL CELLULAR PHONE MARKET Casio entered the market for cellular
handsets during the term with the release of a water- and shock-resistant model for the
IDO/DDI Cellular Group’s cdmaOneTM service. Our handset can be used in the rain and
stand up to rugged treatment, providing a product attribute not previously available:
toughness. These development efforts succeeded in differentiating our offering, which
was well received in the marketplace.
The product also offers the latest functions available in a cdmaOneTM terminal, includ-
ing compatibility with EZaccess and EZweb. In addition to differentiating the handsets
themselves, Casio aims to create a unique market position and to leverage its entry into
the cellular market by incorporating cellular handsets into its Mobile Network
Solutions business.
