Medication errors and healthcare-associated infections aect
millions of people each year, costing billions of dollars in
treatment—and impacting too many lives. To counter these
trends, the Cardinal Health Foundation, along with Ohio business
and healthcare leaders, launched the Solutions for Patient Safety
initiative in 2009 to improve the quality and reduce the cost
of healthcare statewide.
The 25 hospitals involved in the initiative report saving 14 lives,
918 patient days and $12.8 million annually.

Each year, the Cardinal Health Foundation E3 grant program
awards funding to healthcare organizations to help improve
the eectiveness, eciency and excellence of patient care.
The program helps providers implement strategies that lead
to positive patient outcomes.

Nearly 7 million Americans abuse prescription drugs each
month. And prescription drug overdose is now the leading
cause of accidental death in 16 states. To spread the word about
the dangers of prescription drug abuse, the Cardinal Health
Foundation has teamed up with The Ohio State University
College of Pharmacy to create the GenerationRx™ outreach
program, a free, comprehensive suite of resources to encourage
action in communities across the country.
The Cardinal Health Foundation has committed more
than $1.5 million to support increased awareness and
action around the issue of prescription drug abuse.
More than 10,000 people have participated
in GenerationRx™ programs in the past 12 months.
Among youth participating in the programs, more than
85 percent have said they are now less likely to use
prescription drugs that are not prescribed for them.
