OurOutletstoresareespeciallywellpositionedgiven
therecenteconomicshifts.Thecompany’salready
strongU.S.-basedOutletbusinessbecameevenmore
successfulin2008,andthathasmotivatedusto
expandfurther,bothinNorthAmericaandabroad.
Withmorethan300storesintheU.S.andCanada,
someGapOutletandBananaRepublicFactoryStores
wereamongthemostproductiveinourentire
fleet,offeringcustomerstheestablishedproducts,
suchaslogo-wearitems,theyexpecttofindat
exceptionalvalue.
International
Ourbrandsalsoincreasedourtotalsalesoutside
NorthAmericain2008aswechallengedourselves
tohavetheflexibilitytobeaglobalcompanythat
actslocally.
Withmorethan300storesoutsidetheU.S.,Gapis
wellknown,andstillhasplentyofroomtogrow.
WebelievehavingourGapteaminNewYorksetthe
designaestheticforthebrandgloballywillenableus
topresentthebrandinaconsistentwayworldwide.
BananaRepublicalsohasstrongnamerecognition,
withaninternationalpresencethatincludessuc-
cessfulJapanandU.K.stores.Weseeevenmore
opportunityinnewmarketswhereanexpanding
middleclassiscreatingadditionalpotentialforour
accessibleluxurybrand.
We’reexpandingthisinternationalpresencein2009
byaddingabout25Gap,BananaRepublicandOutlet
storesthatwewilloperate.
Inaddition,ourfranchisebusinesscontinuestodevel-
opquicklyandimpressively.Todate,wehaveopened
morethan120GapandBananaRepublicstores
in14countries.In2009,weplantoexpandour
portfolioinfourmorecountries,andaddnearly60
additionalstores.
Online
OurOnlinedivisionimproveditssalesby14percent
lastyear,passingthe$1billionrevenuethreshold.
Thisgrowthwaslargelyduetoinvestmentsmadeover
thepastseveralyearstocreateanewe-commerce
platform,includingour2008launchof“universality,”
whichallowscustomerstopurchasefromallour
brandsinoneshoppingcart,withoneshippingfee.
Piperlime,ouronlineshoeandhandbagshop,celebrat-
editssecondbirthdayandhasbeenahit.Piperlime’s
brandmomentumwillallowustoexpandintonew
productsinthenearfuture.
Ouronlineplatformisalsoonereasonwemadeour
firstacquisitioninmorethan20years:Athleta,a
premierewomen’ssportsandactiveapparelcompany.
Athletafitsnicelyinourportfolioandenjoyshigh
brandloyaltywithitscustomers.Weplantohave
thebrandfullyintegratedintoouronlineshopping
experienceinearly2009.
Lookingahead,weplantoextendouronlinebusiness
intoCanadaandtheU.K.in2010.

Forinstance,lastyearweprovidedin-kindcontribu-
tionsofmorethan$10millionandinvested$15
millioninnonprofitorganizationsaroundtheworld.
Thisincludesmorethan$4milliongeneratedthrough
ourGive&Geteventswherewedonatedfivepercent
ofsalestospecificnonprofits.Inaddition,ourem-
ployeesinvestednearly270,000hoursthroughour
employeevolunteerprograms.
