Wepurchasematerials,partsandsuppliesfromanumberofsuppliers.Insomecaseswepurchasesuchitemsfromsolesource
suppliers.Thematerials,partsandsuppliesessentialtoourbusinessaregenerallyavailableatpresent,andwebelievethatsuch
materials,partsandsupplieswillbeavailableintheforeseeablefuture.
Intellectual property
We own many patents, and have many patent applications pending, in the United States and other countries in fields relating to
ourbusiness.Wehavedevelopedastrong,broad-basedpatentportfolioandcontinuallyaddpatentstothatportfolio.Wealsohave
agreementswithnumerouscompaniesinvolvinglicenserightsandanticipatethatotherlicenseagreementsmaybenegotiatedinthe
future.Ingeneral,ourlicenseagreementshavemulti-yeartermsandmayberenewedafterrenegotiation.
Oursemiconductorpatentportfolioisanongoingcontributortoourrevenue.Wedonotconsiderourbusinessmateriallydependent
upon any one patent or patent license, although taken as a whole, our rights and the products made and sold under patents and patent
licensesareimportanttoourbusiness.
We often participate in industry initiatives to set technical standards. Our competitors may participate in the same initiatives.
Participationintheseinitiativesmayrequireustolicensecertainofourpatentstoothercompaniesonreasonableandnon-
discriminatory terms.
Weowntrademarksthatareusedintheconductofourbusiness.Thesetrademarksarevaluableassets,themostimportantofwhich
are“TexasInstruments”andourcorporatemonogram.OthervaluabletrademarksincludeDLP®.
Research and development
OurR&Dexpensewas$1.36billionin2014,comparedwith$1.52billionin2013and$1.88billionin2012.OurprimaryareasofR&D
investmentareAnalogandEmbeddedProcessingproducts.OurR&Dhasbeendecliningprimarilyasaresultofourdecisiontowind
down investments in legacy wireless products. This wind-down is now complete.
WeconductmostofourR&Dinternally.However,wealsocloselyengagewithawiderangeofthirdparties,includingsoftwaresuppliers,
universitiesandselectindustryconsortia,andwecollaboratewithourfoundrysuppliersonsemiconductormanufacturingtechnology.
