Express Scripts 2010 Annual Report 6
Innovative Care,
Inspired Results
From our 1998 introduction of Step Therapy to the
2010 introduction of Select Solutions
Powered by
ChoiceSM and Specialty Benefi t Services, our clients
have been able to utilize fresh, actionable programs
that improve care while driving out waste.
Specialty drugs — as defi ned by the Academy of
Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP)
are high-cost
medications usually prescribed for complex or chronic
medical conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, hemophilia,
hepatitis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Costs for specialty drugs are expected to increase from
24% of national drug spend in 2009 to 40% by 2014.3
Based on claims data, more than 55% of total specialty
drug spend occurs within the medical benefi t, with many
of these drugs administered in a doctor’s offi ce, clinic,
ambulatory infusion site, hospital or by a home health worker.

Select Solutions
Select Solutions applies behavioral science to key
challenges in the pharmacy benefi t: channel mix (e.g.,
retail networks, home delivery of medication, etc.); drug
mix (brand vs. lower-cost alternatives); therapy adherence;
and the spiraling cost of specialty medications.
The Select Solutions suite of products gives members the
choice they want through voluntary programs with little
or no plan design change. Plan sponsors can implement
these solutions at any time during the year. Participating
clients have already realized signifi cant savings.
Specialty Benefi t Services
Another new product that’s put us in front of our
competitors is Express Scripts Specialty Benefi t Services
(SBS)
a fi rst-in-the-industry offering that addresses the
skyrocketing costs of specialty medications and enhances
patient care across the pharmacy/medical spectrum.
Express Scripts offers the most comprehensive approach
to managing total specialty drug spend
