LOOKING AHEAD
The priorities for Unum US going forward
are: continue to improve the profi tability
of its group income protection line of
business, which saw encouraging trends
in 2006; identify and capitalize on
growth opportunities through new
and expanded offerings and by more
effectively leveraging its strong brand;
enhance its operating effectiveness
through continuous improvement and a
focus on better quality and consistency;
and develop its people to ensure
continued, outstanding customer service.
The benefi ts marketplace is changing —
employers are increasingly faced with rising
health care and retirement costs, shifting
demographics and a tightening labor market.
As a means of stabilizing their costs and
meeting the needs of a diverse workforce,
employers are turning away from “one-size-
ts-all” benefi ts packages to more fl exible
plan designs with shared responsibility for
cost. Unum US is responding to this changing
environment with a broad, fl exible portfolio
of benefi ts — along with unparalleled
customer service.
IN 2006, UNUM RECEIVED
A NUMBER OF ACCOLADES,
INCLUDING BEING NAMED
ONE OF THE BEST PLACES
TO WORK IN MAINE AND
TENNESSEE, AS WELL AS A
RECIPIENT OF THE 2006 SLOAN
AWARDS FOR BUSINESS
EXCELLENCE IN WORKPLACE
FLEXIBILITY. ADDITIONALLY,
UNUM REMAINS COMMITTED
TO SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
AND RECOGNIZES THE ROLE
IT PLAYS IN IMPROVING
THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN ITS
COMMUNITIES. LAST YEAR,
THE COMPANY CONTRIBUTED
MORE THAN $4 MILLION TO
CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS
THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY,
AND EMPLOYEES DONATED
COUNTLESS HOURS ON BEHALF
OF THE CAUSES THEY ARE
MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT.
“IN 2006, WE MADE SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENTS TO DELIVER PRODUCTS AND
SERVICES TO MEET EMPLOYERS’ CHANGING NEEDS. OUR STRATEGY GOING
FORWARD INCLUDES FOCUSING ON THE MARKETS WE KNOW AND SERVE
WELL, CONTINUING TO STRENGTHEN OUR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS, AND
REMAINING DISCIPLINED ABOUT THE WAY WE MANAGE OUR BUSINESS.”
BOB BEST | CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, UNUM US
