COST EFFICIENCY
One eect of shrinking defence spending in many
countries in recent years is an increased interest in
cost eciency. is benets Gripen, which combi-
nes advanced technology and high performance
with low operating costs.
e total cost of an aircra includes both the
purchase price and the operating costs during its
lifetime. Gripen has a low life cycle cost and a low
cost per ight hour compared to its competitors.
Reliability is a key.
Gripen is also easy to maintain and repair. e
aircra can be readied in just ten minutes, with full
weaponry and fuel, by six mechanics. An engine
can be replaced in less than an hour. is is one
reason why operating costs are far below the
competition. ese features are also a major
tactical advantage for users.
MARKET
CASE: GRIPEN AROUND THE WORLD
CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT
Gripen is continuously evolving through new
generations and upgrades of existing aircra. e
entire system is designed to easily accommodate
performance improvements and new functions.
Due to the high level of computerisation on board,
most of the upgrades are to the aircras many
computer systems. New functions can quickly be
added through soware patches.
Gripen is modularly designed and can be
exibly adapted to dierent needs. e design
also facilitates industrial co-operations and
the manufacture of certain subsystems in
customer countries.
Saab has a strong position on the global market. In 2013 Sweden
ordered 60 Gripen E and in 2014 a contract to supply the next
generation Gripen to Brazil was signed. Gripen now has an established
position as a technologically advanced, flexible and cost efficient
combat aircraft system.
FLEXIBILITY
Gripen is a true multi-role ghter. With the push of a
button, the pilot can quickly change the aircras roles.
Whereas other types of aircra have to be prepared for
their mission while still on the ground, Gripen can
switch in the air. is exibility is an important advantage
in combat. Having one aircra can that can carry out
dierent missions also increases cost eciency.
COMPATIBILITY
e Gripen system is designed to take part in inter
national missions with other countries and is fully
compatible with NATOs systems. e latest versions
are even more globally interoperable.
