2015 POLARIS INDUSTRIES INC. ANNUAL REPORT 9
>> We developed the Indian
Thunder Stroke111 engine
in just 27months
>> We redesigned the 800H.O.
Cleanfire® 2-stroke engine
with electronically controlled
exhaust valves for class-
leading acceleration
>> The 2016 RZRXP
TurboEPS features our new
144-horsepower Prostar®
turbo engine, our highest-
performing engine to date
We continue to use engine
suppliers for entry-level, value
products, such as youth ATVs,
and for products that aren’t a
big part of our portfolio today,
such as diesel. But about
85percent of our powertrains
are now developed in-house.
And we’ve set up the expertise
to meet future demands
through three key strategies:
>> Build the best team
To ensure we had the technical capabilities
to be successful, we acquired Swissauto
in2010. Co-founder Urs Wenger had built
the company into a leading developer of
high-performance, high-eciency engines.
He oversees our powertrain technical team,
while General Manager Steve Cohoon makes
sure we have the processes and tools in
place to leverage our powertrain successes
across the organization.
>> Use an economical platform structure
We borrowed a page from our chassis
playbook and developed five platforms that
serve as the foundation for all our engines.
While each engine has its own distinct
brand variances, they share some common
elements to maximize our powertrain
investment.
>> Develop electric expertise
As the demand for electric vehicles
increases, we want to be in a position to
grab those sales with high-performing
options. Our acquisition of Brammo’s
electric motorcycle business in2015 gives
us expertise in lithium-ion rechargeable
batteries. It allowed us to be first to market
with a high-performance electric motorcycle
(Victory Empulse® TT) and lithium-ion
O-Road Vehicle (RANGER EV Li-ion).
