The weighted average fair value for options
granted during 1998, 1997 and 1996 was $6.00,
$9.95 and $10.46, respectively.The fair values were
estimated using the Black-Scholes option-pricing
model.The following weighted average assumptions
we r e used in the fair value calculation for 1998, 19 9 7
and 1996, respectively:(i) risk-free interest rate of
4.57%, 5.71% and 6.23%;(ii) expected option lives
of 1.9 years,3.7 years and 2.7 years; (iii) expected
volatility of 44.5%, 30.0% and 37. 6 % ; and (iv) no
e x p e c t e d dividend yield.
The Company applies APB Opinion 25
and related Interpretations in accounting for its
plans.Accordingly, no compensation cost has been
recognized for its stock option or employee stock
purchase plans. Had compensation cost for the
Company’s plans been determined based on the fair
value at the grant dates of options and employee
purchase rights consistent with the method of SFAS
No. 123,the Company’s net income and earnings
per share would have been reduced to the pro
forma amounts indicated below for the years ended
December 31 (amounts in thousands,except per
share data):
