In the UK, network operators have collectively
developed a code of practice for the self-regulation of
age-sensitive content on mobiles. As part of this, they
will appoint an independent classification body to
provide a framework for classifying commercial content
that is unsuitable for customers under the age of 18.
Promoting safe driving
We followed our successful ‘Hang up or Go Handsfree’
awareness campaign in December 2003 with a further
campaign a year after the new driving legislation
coming into force. In December 2004 we conducted
customer research to find out which area in the UK
had the highest and lowest awareness of the new
legislation. We then used the results to target areas
where awareness of the legislation was low. We also
created a guide to help customers choose the right
handsfree solution and now have over 60 dedicated
car kit installation centres across the UK.
As a member of Mobile Industry Crime Action Forum,
we also endorse the work of MEND, the Mobile
Equipment National Database, that provides recovery
and assistance with an aim to reunite owners with
their property. The Carphone Warehouse is leading
the way in supporting this new campaign as the
first UK retailer to automatically register all of its
insurance customers.
Mobile phones and health
The Carphone Warehouse continues to lead the
industry in providing customers with all of the
information on mobile phones and health concerns
so that they can make informed decisions. An
independent and extensive health fact sheet is
available in our stores and on our website, with the
11th edition due for publication in the next few months.
We also continue to list specific absorption rates
for every handset in our buyers’ guide every month
and again on our website.
