Customer special o rders increased in 1998, due in part to the rollout of BookMaster, o ur new
in-store operating system, now installed in appro ximately 25 percent o f the Barnes & Noble stores.
BookMaster will be fully installed in the remainder of our co mpany stores in 1999. Thro ugh this
dynamic new system, store customers have access to the millions of titles available to our online
shoppers with the o ption of in-store or home delivery. BookMaster also enhances our existing
merchandise replenishment systems, resulting in higher in-stock positions and better productivity
at the store level. It also facilitates efficiencies in receiving, cashiering, returns pro cessing, and a
myriad o f o ther store tasks.
