Anespeciallynoteworthypartoftheacquisitionwas
ouradditionofoneofthelargestintrastatenaturalgas
pipelinesinTexas,whichbecametheAtmosPipeline–
TexasDivision.Thisexpansivepipelinesystem,shown
onpage9,supportsourregulatedutilityoperationsby
carryingnaturalgasfromproducersandstoragefieldsto
ourlocaldistributionsystem.Itcrisscrossesthestate,
withterminalsatthreemajorgastransportationhubs
wherewecanbuygasfromotherintrastatelinesand
majorinterstatepipelines.Italsotransportsvolumes
fromthestate’sninemajorgas-producingbasins,
whichholdasubstantialportionofourcountry’sonshore
naturalgasreserves.
AtmosPipeline–Texasgivesusnewopportunities
totransportgasforproducerstowidermarkets.In
fiscal2005,thepipelineaddedtransportationvolumes
of375.6billioncubicfeet(Bcf).Itcontributed$149.5
million,or95percent,ofthe$157.9millioningrossprofit
fromourpipelineandstoragesegment.Bycomparison,
thesegment’sgrossprofitlastyearbeforetheacquisition
wasjust$10.4million.
Wearecontinuingtounlockaddedvaluefromthe
Texaspipeline.Wecurrentlyhavefourpipelineprojects
underwaythatweexpectwilladdtoearningsstarting
infiscal2006.Thelargestoftheseisajoint-ventureproject
toinstall45milesof30-inchpipelinetoservethe
northernsuburbsoftheDallas-FortWorthMetroplex.
ThisnewpipelinewillhelpAtmosEnergydeliver
reliablenaturalgassuppliestooneofthefastest-growing
consumermarketsinthecountry.Italsowillprovide
neededgastransmissioncapacitytoservenaturalgas
producersandshippersintheTexasintrastate
wholesalegasmarket.

Ournaturalgasmarketingsegmentproduced
exceptionalresultsinfiscal2005,contributing30cents
perdilutedshare.Theimprovementlargelywasdue
toachievingmorefavorablearbitragespreadsusingour
undergroundnaturalgasstoragefacilities.Italso
camefromourmarketingeffortsthataddedcustomers
innewareas.
TheTXUGasacquisitionopenedupalargegas
marketingareainTexaswithhundredsofprospective
customers,providingfurtherconfirmationthatthe
acquisitionisagoodfitwithallsegmentsofourbusiness.
Duringfiscal2005,ournonutilityoperations
contractedfor9.0Bcfofadditionalworkinggasstorage
capacityandexpandedourmarketingeffortsinto
fourmorestates.Altogether,ournaturalgasmarketing
operationsnowservemorethan800industrial,
municipalandothercustomersin22states.

Wecontinuetobesuccessfulinmaintainingourrates,
with$15millionto$25millioninaverageannual
additionstoourutilityrevenues.Partoftheincreasein
fiscal2005camefromourGRIPfilingsinTexas.GRIP,
theGasReliabilityInfrastructureProgram,isaTexas
lawthatpermitsnaturalgasutilitiestoearnatimely
returnofandontheirbasicinvestments.Withoutfiling
alengthyratecase,autilitycanraiseratesannually
topayforinvestmentsinpipelinesandotherfacilitiesto
maintainreliabilityandsafetyandtomeetcustomer
growth.Theutilitymustfileacompleteratecaseatleast
everyfiveyearstojustifyitsGRIPexpenditures.
Highernaturalgascostshaveintensifiedpublic
scrutinyofallutilities’rates.Asaresult,regulatory
bodiesinthreeofourstateshavebeenaskedtoreview
ourratestructures.Wearecooperatingfullyinthese
inquiriesandbelieveourratesinalljurisdictions
remainfairandreasonable.
Inourratefilings,weareseekingtodecouplethe
recoveryofourapprovedmarginsfromcustomer
usagepatternsthatareaffectedbyweather,declining
useandconservation.Becausegasvolumesfluctuate,
ourearningsdependonconsumptionfactorsoverwhich
wehavelittlecontrol.Weareseekingtoputmoreof
ourcostsintoourbasicmonthlycustomerchargeand
toaddadjustmentsthathelpmoderatetheeffectsof
theriseandfallinourgassalesvolumes.
OurmostrecentrateagreementinMississippi,
forexample,reflectsourdecouplinggoals.Thestate’s
PublicServiceCommissionallowedustoshift$10
millioninannualmarginsfromvolume-basedcharges
tofixedcustomercharges.Wealsoweregrantedan
improvedweathernormalizationadjustment(WNA),
whichadjustsourrateswhenwinterweatherturns
eitherunseasonablywarmorcool,andweobtaineda
GRIP-likemechanisminMississippitoreducethe
regulatorylagfortheinvestmentswemakeonbehalfof
ourcustomers.

LouisianaonAugust29,AtmosEnergywasthefirst
utilitybackintohard-hitJeffersonParish.Thereand
elsewhere,employees—manyofwhomhadlosttheir
ownhomes—workedtirelessly,somelivingforweeks
atcompanyservicecentersinordertorespondto
customers’needs.AtmosEnergymobilizedsupplies
andmanpowertoaiditscrews,displacedemployees,
customersandneighbors.Thesecondstorm,Rita,delivered
alesserblowtoAtmosEnergy’soperationsinwestern
Louisiana.Disruptionwasfurtherminimizedthanksto
wisepreparednessandfastresponse.
