Broadband internet with ADSL
technology is provided over your
standard telephone line. Currently,
a standard phone line can receive
up to 56 kilobits of information per
second, but with ADSL you can
subscribe to a service with data
download speed of up to 1.5 megabits
per second. ADSL means all 857 pages
of the classic novel Moby Dick could
be downloaded in just a few seconds
– at current phone line speeds you’d
only get 3 pages in the same time!ºº
Telstra’s rollout of ADSL started in
late August 2000. Interest in ADSL
is running hot with more than
2.3 million hits or requests for
information captured at telstra.com™

in a twelve week period from May
to July. We aim to make broadband
available to all Australians, as shown
in the map above.
More and more customers
will progressively have access to
high speed service via ADSL from
21 August 2000. Commencing with
all capital cities, Toowoomba,
Launceston and Bunbury, Telstra
has embarked on an ambitious
2 year program to deploy ADSL
capability to about 1300 exchanges
across Australia bringing high
