DISPOSABLE
GUIDEWIRE FOR
ENDOSCOPIC
TREATMENT
VISIGLIDE™
Jointly developed with Terumo
Corporation, this guidewire
for endoscopic use leads the
treatment device to the target
region, thereby helping to
reduce burdens on doctors
and medical staff as well as to
shorten surgery time.
SURGICAL & ENDOTHERAPY PRODUCTS
Sales of surgical and endotherapy devices fell 7.1% year
on year to ¥158,768 million (US$1,764 million). During
the fiscal year under review, sales of surgical-related
products offered through the business collaboration
with Gyrus and sampling products, including biopsy
forceps, were brisk. In addition, Olympus enjoyed
strong sales overseas for a new item for the endoscopic
treatment of pancreaticobiliary ducts in the dispos-
able guidewire lineup jointly developed with Terumo
Corporation and new product for laparoscopic surgery,
which, compared with open surgery, imposes a lower
burden on patients. However, foreign currency exchange
fluctuations affected overall results, leading to
decreased revenue.
OUTLOOK FOR FISCAL 2011
In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, Olympus
will reinforce its lineups of surgical and endotherapy
products while strengthening its sales structure in
China, where the market continues to expand. Despite
the influence of foreign currency exchange rate fluctua-
tions, Olympus anticipates revenue growth on the back
of market recoveries in Japan and North America as well
as the market growth in China and other Asian countries.
Accordingly, Olympus is forecasting sales of ¥365 bil-
lion and operating income of ¥76 billion in this business.
