REVIEW OF OPERATIONS
GASTROINTESTINAL ENDOSCOPES
Sales of gastrointestinal endoscopes declined 9.8%
compared with the previous fiscal year to ¥191,948
million (US$2,133 million). Despite sales expansion in
the Chinese market and a steady sales increase through
the Value-per-Procedure (VPP) program in Japan and
its equivalent overseas, foreign currency translation
loss due to the strong yen and sluggish global economy
caused weak sales of Olympuss mainstay high-
definition endoscope system, resulting in decreased
income in this business.
Core products in the Medical Systems Business
include both gastroenterological and surgical endo-
scopes, endotherapy devices, endoscopic ultrasound
systems and medical information systems.
Sales in the Medical Systems Business decreased
8.6% year on year to ¥350,716 million (US$3,897
million), while operating income edged down 0.2% to
¥74,929 million (US$833 million).
During the fiscal year under review, the appreciation
of the yen impacted the Medical Systems Business,
leading to a sales decrease of approximately ¥25,500
million. In addition, a change in the Gyrus Group
Limited’s fiscal term resulted in a ¥8,000 million
decrease in segment revenue. However, operating
income remained on par with the previous fiscal year
thanks to Olympuss cost reduction efforts, mainly in
the surgical and endotherapy device fields.
The actual capsules do not
have a logo on them.
