RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Aiming to Contribute to Society through the Development of Advanced Technology
The OKI Group actively develops and introduces cutting-edge technologies with the aim of creating
products that contribute to the advancement of today’s information and communication society. We
seek to create high-value-added products through the early adoption of new and progressive technolo-
gies. At the same time, we actively amass basic technologies with a view to the future.
In each of the main information and communication hierarchies—hardware, systems, and
applications—OKI not only creates core technologies for cutting-edge products, but also
integrates those technologies to generate new value.
Info-Telecom Hardware Technologies In the field of telecommunications, OKI seeks to cre-
ate more flexible, high-quality broadband systems. To this end, we have developed
10Gbps-grade optical access technology for communication bandwidth control, which per-
mits delivery of top-quality, energy-efficient communication. OKI also develops cutting-edge
virtual passive optical network technology with the aim of integrating access networks and
metropolitan area networks and realizing efficiency in their operations.
Systems Technologies OKI develops new network service systems that integrate sensor
networks and context awareness technology in order to customize and optimize sensor
data. Adopting new networking technology and the 920MHz bandwidth wireless radio, the
aim is to realize low power consumption systems that can be applied to a variety of scenar-
ios, from the public sector to the home. In video recognition systems, our ongoing product
development efforts are directed at complementing traditional facial recognition functions
with age and gender estimation and behavioral recognition capabilities. We have started
applying such systems to the digital signage field, and are developing sophisticated recog-
nition technologies in order to broaden the scope of applications.
Media Processing Technologies OKI, recognizing the importance of audio, video, and
other media processing technologies in the development of future applications, is thus
pursuing the development of those technologies. In-house developed technologies, includ-
ing our sound source separation and low-resource video encoding technologies, contribute
to the creation of applications that transcend time and distance, such as next-generation
videoconferencing systems. We are also focusing on development of presence estimation
technology, to recognize the user’s location and behavioral context, to be used for new
coming applications for rapidly proliferating smartphones and tablet devices. In these
ways, we seek to realize a new world of communications.
There are high expectations for quantum information processing and communication tech-
nology as a means of breaking through the limitations of classical information and
communication. Having succeeded at developing a proprietary quantum light source, OKI
has demonstrated a light source with highly efficient and genuine quantum characteristics.
We will continue advancing research and development aimed at realizing a quantum
encryption system to enable physical layer security that is superior to existing security. By
advancing LED technology that underpins our proprietary LED printing technologies, we are
also tackling the challenge of developing LED applied new products which realize displays
and other devices with a full color range.
OKI focuses on fields with potential for growth in today’s changing society with its aging
population and advanced information technologies. One such field is wireless network tech-
nology, which helps enhance the mobility of information and communication. We are
seeking to create new businesses in these and other areas. We will continue pursuing
seamless R&D activities, linking technological development to product rollouts and the cre-
ation of new businesses.
