Financial review
40

over the previous year. Operating profit was ¥3.8 billion, an in-
crease of ¥7.5 billion over fiscal 1998.
Sales in other regions were ¥245.6 billion, a decrease of
¥50.3 billion over the previous year. Operating loss was ¥4.9 bil-
lion, an increased loss of ¥9.4 billion over fiscal 1998.
Total assets
Total corporate assets at the end of March 2000 were ¥2,784.1 bil-
lion, a 9.0% reduction over the previous year. This was the result
of multi-faceted efforts to trim the Company's asset portfolio.
Inventories stood at ¥341.4 billion, a major 10.3% reduction
of ¥39.3 billion on the year before. This decrease was the result of
determined reductions in finished product inventories.
Short- and long-term loans totaled ¥118.4 billion, a 25.4% re-
duction of ¥40.3 billion on the year before.
Property, plant and equipment at the end of March 2000 to-
taled ¥1,219.3 billion, a decrease of 7.1% over the year before.
This was chiefly due to foreign exchange rates and some cutbacks
in capital expenditure.
Stockholders' equity
Retained earnings at the end of March 2000 were ¥76.8 billion.
The decrease was due mainly to the net loss of ¥23.3 billion for
the year. As a result, shareholders' equity stood at ¥347.4 billion.
Capital expenditure
The Company reported capital expenditure (leased vehicle assets
excluded) of ¥50.6 billion, a 18.8% decrease over the previous
year.
