Personnel expenses comprise the following:

As of December 31, 2008, the companies of the Merck Group had 32,800 employees
(2007: 30,968). The average number of employees during the year was 31,971
(2007: 30,791).
[44] Material costs
Material costs amounted to € 1,089 million in 2008 (2007: € 1,045 million - excluding
Generics).
[45] Auditors’ fees
The costs of the auditors of the financial statements of the Merck Group (KPMG) can be
