ULTRA-COMPACTFUELCELLBATTERIESFORUSEINMOBILEAPPLIANCES
Casioisintheprocessofdevelopinganultra-compactfuelcellbatteryforuseinnotebook
PCs,digitalcamerasandothermobileinformationequipment.Thefuelcellbatteryunder
developmentisaboutthesizeofanordinaryrechargeablelithiumbattery,buthasalifetime
aboutfourtimesaslong.
Casio’sfuelcellbatteryutilizesareformermoduletoefcientlyproducehigh-purityhydrogen
frommethanol.TheCompanyhassucceededinminiaturizingitsreformermodule,makingit
suitableforadoptioninmobileappliances.Largecostreductionswereachievedbyusingglass
insteadofsiliconintheproductionofthemodule.Wehavealreadydevelopedanultra-compact
module,whichincorporatesaheaterandalltheotherpartsrequiredforactualoperation.We
willcontinuewithourdevelopmenteffortstorealizetheearlycommercializationofthisproduct.
FingerprintVerication
FINGERPRINTSENSORWITHLCDDISPLAY
Fingerprintsaredrawingattentionasameansofpersonalidenticationinelectroniccommercial
transactions.Lastyear,applyingknowledgeandexpertisecultivatedinitsTFTbusiness,Casio
succeededintestsofaunitthatcombinesangerprintsensorandanLCD.Casiohasreduced
thesizeoftheimagesensingelementstoraisethetransmissionfactorwithoutanydeterioration
inscreenvisibilityandsensorphotosensitivity.Consequently,Casio’scompactLCDscreen
isideallysuitedforincorporationinmobiledatadevices.Itispossibletotakeangerprint
readingfromwetordryngers,andtheprecisionofthereadingremainsatthesamehighlevel
regardlessofbrightnessofthelocation,allowingforusebothindoorsandoutdoors.Weexpect
salesofthisproduct,asasecurityitem,toshowacontinuousupwardtrendinyearstocome.
OrganicElectroluminescentDisplay
POLYMER-BASEDOELDISPLAYUTILIZINGHASTTECHNOLOGY
Casioiscurrentlydevelopinganorganicelectroluminescent(OEL)displaythatfullsthe
requirementsofnext-generationdisplays.TheOELdisplaydoesawaywiththeneedfor
backlightingrequiredbyliquidcrystaldisplay,featuresanultra-thindesign,withlowpower
consumption.UtilizingourproprietaryhyperamorphoussiliconTFT(HAST)technology,wehave
createdapolymer-basedOELdisplaythatallowsforhighproductivityatlow-cost.In2004,
Casiosucceededincreatingtheworld’srstpolymer-basedtriple-layerOELdisplaythatoffersan
enhancedbrightnessandstrongercontrast,aswellasimprovedimagequality.Wewillworkto
furtherdevelopthistechnology,withtheaimofbuildingOELdisplaysintoournext-generation
coredisplaybusiness.
