Overview of Business Performance
Wacom Co., Ltd. and Its Subsidiaries
Our results by business sector
Electronic Systems and Devices (ESD)
business
Global sales of our pen tablets continued to grow with only
slight regional differences. In the professional pen tablet
segment, this growth was helped by the expansion of emerging
markets, particularly those in Asia and Oceania.
The launch of new pen tablets made a positive difference. Our
consumer pen tablet, Bamboo, made a strong impact on sales.
The Cintiq 12WX interactive pen display, which was launched for
the professional market, was extremely well-received. We also
announced an LCD signature tablet called ‘SignPad’, designed
to capture electronic digital signatures. We are already receiving
orders for this product from financial institutions.
Our pen-sensor components business enjoyed impressive
success. In this sector, our major customers are Tablet PC
manufacturers. Our big triumph in this market was a new
generation ultra-light and ultra-slim sensor board, which actually
accounted for more than 80 percent of total shipments. In
addition, the release of Microsofts Windows Vista
TM
with new
built-in pen functionality, propelled shipments of PCs that
included our pen and pen sensor components. HP, a major PC
manufacturer, aggressively launched its consumer Tablet PC in
January 2008, which is helping further drive consumer demand
for our Penabled DualTouch technology. We are now seeing
digital pens becoming more popular among general PC users.
Finally, major PC manufacturers adopted LCD modules that
include our pen-sensor components and touch panel sensors.
These sales contributed to a significant increase in our
components business.
As a result, ESD business FY08 sales ended at ¥35.84bn
(+28.6% YoY), and operating profit ¥7.96bn (+25.1% YoY).
Engineering Collaborative Solutions (ECS)
business
In September 2007, ECS released a new product called ‘ECAD
/ dio’ version 8.0 in the electrical design field of the CAD market.
It supports users of the English version of Windows VistaTM and
includes enhanced security functions. In addition to this new
release, we provided users with incentives to upgrade and
install additional CAD products. We also achieved success by
pursuing new users through our portal website and by
increased attendance to industry exhibitions.
In the PDM market, we proposed package solutions such as a
project resources management system and a claim information
management system. Both are based on input cultivated from
existing users.
As a result, ECS business sales ended at ¥897mn (-2.8% YoY)
and operating profit ¥140mn (-9.6%YoY).
