SATURDAY, FEB. 27, 2010 – an 8.8 magnitude
earthquake hit Chile. More than 500 people
were killed, scores more were injured. Homes
and businesses were leveled. It was devastating.
Thousands of miles away, employees from
The Principal answered calls and went to work.
The first goal was to make sure all employees of
Principal Chile in Santiago were okay. They were.
The next goal was to get operations in Chile back
online as soon as possible. We did. By Monday
morning, Principal Chile was open for business,
thanks to the efforts of many employees in Chile,
Mexico and the United States.
Once they and their families were safe, employees
of Principal Chile turned their attention to those
who suffered loss. They organized a volunteer
effort to help people whose homes were destroyed
in the town of Hualañé. As a result, more than
140 Principal Chile employees, family members
and friends traveled to Hualañé and rebuilt
22 homes.
This is just one example of many of how employees
at The Principal care.
Caring about others – colleagues, neighbors,
communities – is just part of who we are at
The Principal. In 2010, employees logged more
than 30,000 hours of volunteer time off and
donated more than $2 million to charities such
as United Way.
No wonder Ethisphere Magazine named The
Principal to its 2010 list of the world’s most
ethical companies for the fourth straight year.
