29 MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION
November 2002 saw the launch in Japan of the COLT, MMC’s new compact car. The COLT is the first model to be manu-
factured on a platform jointly developed with DC. It also represents the first expression of the new MMC design identity.
Japanese consumers warmed quickly to the launch of the Customer Free Choice (CFC) system that accompanied the intro-
duction of the COLT. Given an extended choice of various optional fixtures and fittings, a total of 14,137 units of the new
model were sold during March 2003 alone. This figure marked the highest monthly sales ever recorded by MMC for a single
passenger car model.
In May 2003, MMC launched the GRANDIS minivan. Fitted with three full rows of seats, this model combines comfort
with a sporty feel. Through the increased value that it adds, the GRANDIS minivan is designed to make customers happy
that they chose, own and drive it, again using the CFC system to meet the varying needs of different customers. Orders in
the first 2 weeks after launch were 7,000 units.
Another development during the year was the January 2003 launch of an integrated sales network, which combined
the previous two channels into one. The restructuring of MMC’s domestic sales network continues at a rapid pace, with the
objective of restoring profits at the earliest stage.
INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS
Excluding the bridge period of January-March 2003, MMC’s international passenger car sales in fiscal 2002 posted a new
record total of 1.21 million units, an increase of 5% over the previous year.
NORTH AMERICA
Total auto sales in the U.S. (representing the combined sum of passenger cars and small commercial vehicles) dropped 2%
in 2002 to 16.82 million units. MMC’s passenger car sales in the U.S. set a new record for the fourth consecutive year, rising
7% to 345,000 units. Growth stemmed partly from the new LANCER, launched in July 2001, which contributed its first full
year of sales. Sales commenced in Canada in September 2002. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA), the new
regional operating company established in January 2003, posted total passenger car sales in North America of 360,000
units in calendar year 2002.
