MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION Annual Report 2001 [39]
MMC enjoys a secure position and
solid profit base in Japans truck and
bus market. However, the recall-related
issues in 2000 have hurt the brand’s
image since last July, forcing MMC’s
total domestic shipments down 10%
to 61,000 units. On the other hand,
domestic production was up 5% to
103,000 units.
New Products
MMC added a new model to its SUPER
GREAT series of large trucks. The new
short-cab version boasts the longest
platform and largest cargo capacity of
any domestic truck, and is driven by an
inline six-cylinder intercooled turbo
engine that combines class-topping
output and high fuel efficiency.
MMC also launched its new AERO NO-
STEP MIDI series during the period under
review. Not only do these medium- to
small-sized route buses come equipped
with features for the physically chal-
lenged, they also offer the largest no-
step area and passenger capacity in
their class.
INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS
MMC exported 35,000 trucks and
buses in fiscal 2000, up 9% over the
previous year.
North America
Total market sales in the region dipped
4% to 367,000 units. MMC sales, at 5,000
units, also dropped 9% relative to the
previous year. MMC is endeavoring to
reverse that trend by revamping its
existing dealer network, strengthening
its base of operations, and increasing
the number of sales outlets.
Europe
Overall sales of the CANTER small trucks
in Europe rose 3% to 145,000 units. How-
ever, sales of MMC brand trucks and
buses dropped by 2% to 11,000 units.
Australia
Australias total truck and bus sales
remained at 19,000 units, reflecting
the end of the special demand thanks
to the Sydney Olympics. MMC sold
3,000 trucks and buses in that country,
a year-on-year drop of 5%. MMCs
share also declined slightly to 14%.
Indonesia
Indonesias truck and bus sales totaled
37,000 units, a dramatic increase of 172%
over the previous year. This activity
was supported by strong demand in
the replacement market. MMC sales
echoed the market, soaring 187% to
23,000 units, a 62% market share.
