The use of lighter materials and computer-
aided design techniquesare contributing
to reductions in vehicle weight.
Vehicle weight reduction
The use of lighter materials and
computer-aided design techniques,
which have helped to rationalize body
structures, integrate components and
develop modularized parts, are con-
tributing to reductions in vehicle
weight. Despite weight increases due
to more spacious cabins and enhanced
safety features, the new LANCER CEDIA
sedan and station wagon models
launched in fiscal 2000 were only mini-
mally heavier than previous models.
This was the result of using lighter,
high-tensile steel and steel plates of
variable thickness. The incorporation
of SWS (smart wiring system) and
structural modifications to parts also
helped keep weight down. In the range
of truck models that went on sale in
fiscal 2000, reductions in the weight of
the engine, cab and chassis helped to
offset increases accompanying changes
required for compliance with Japanese
Long-term Emission Regulations.
Reductions in aerodynamic drag
MMC continues to incorporate the re-
sults of research into aerodynamic drag
through wind-tunnel testing and
computer-based analysis to improve
the aerodynamic performance of new
models.
MEASURES TO PREVENT AIR
POLLUTION
Gasoline exhaust emissions
To reduce exhaust emissions from
gasoline-powered engines, MMC is
working to improve the design and/or
performance of engine components,
the structure, precious metals and
positioning of catalytic converters, as
well as engine control.
