[38] MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION Annual Report 2001
Regarding local operations, Hunan
Changfeng Motor Co., Ltd. (CFA)
produced and sold 9,000 original PAJERO
SUVs, 127% more than in the previous
year. Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi
Motors Engine Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
(SAME) continued to increase produc-
tion as well, selling 25,000 engines for
mid-sized cars. Moreover, Harbin
Dongan Automotive Engine Manufac-
turing Ltd. (HDMC) began the trial
production of small engines at the end
of the year. MMC set up four dis-
tributors in bonded areas in Shanghai,
Guangzhou, Tianjin and Dalian in a bid
to build its own sales network in China.
TAIWAN:
Taiwans auto sales totaled 400,000
units, a figure little changed from that
of the preceding year. MMC sold 84,000
cars during 2000. This was a 5% drop
from 1999 but was still sufficient to
maintain MMCs position as the second-
best-selling car brand on the island,
next to Toyota. In terms of cumulative
unit sales (including trucks), MMC
retained its position as the number-one
brand for a fourth straight year. However,
MMCs share of Taiwans automobile
market dropped slightly from the pre-
vious years 22% to 21%.
INDIA:
Overall sales in India during 2000 rose
21% to 697,000 units.
In that country, MMC-brand cars are
produced and marketed by Hindustan
Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, Ltd.
MMCs sales grew 12% during the year,
coming in at 8,000 units.
AUSTRALIA:
Australias total industry sales rose to
767,000 units, up slightly from the pre-
ceding year to the second-highest level
in history. MMC sold 71,000 units, up
63% year on year, thanks to a strong
showing by the new PAJERO. MMC
retained its 9% market share.
TRUCK & BUS
JAPAN
Total sales of trucks and buses rose
slightly, despite continued weakness in
that sector. Japanese automobile manu-
facturers sold 231,000 trucks and buses
in fiscal 2000, up 5% from the previous
year. Of this number, regular trucks
(with a vehicle weight of eight tons or
more under Japanese classification)
accounted for 77,000 units, an increase
of 4% year on year.
