7HARMAN Annual Report 2010
Our grateful customers have responded to HARMAN’s track record for
innovation and execution with new multi-year projects that add to an
awarded business backlog exceeding $12 billion.
Fiscal Year 2010 was a transformative period
for HARMAN’s automotive business, where
we grew our sales by 23 percent to $2.5 billion
and returned to pro tability. We began the scal
year by completing successful delivery of what
is believed to be the largest-ever backlog of
major audio and infotainment projects in
the automotive supply sector. Thirteen model
platforms were launched for eight different
global automakers, spanning custom in-car
branded audio, navigation, hands-free
communication and driver assist technologies.
Our customers responded by awarding
HARMAN with signi cant new business
during the year. BMW and Daimler selected
our premium infotainment systems for
their upcoming luxury platforms, and
Chrysler speci ed our branded audio for
their SRT series of high-performance vehicles.
BMW awarded our company an additional
infotainment contract for entry-level luxury cars
and we launched new branded audio systems
for several automakers.
During the scal year, we introduced a game-
changing new scalable infotainment platform
that serves a new range of vehicle price points.
Toyota selected the new system for its
rst non-Japanese infotainment contract,
followed shortly by a global infotainment
award from Chrysler/Fiat. We launched
our new HALOSonic™ noise management
technology for electric vehicles in cooperation
with Lotus Engineering, and partnered with
others to standardize the interface between
smart phones and in-car systems. We formed
a strategic partnership with China’s Neusoft
Corporation to develop advanced technologies
for automotive and consumer electronics.
Complementing our established leadership in
Europe and the Americas, HARMAN invested
during the scal year in new resources to
serve the fast-growing emerging markets.
We are dramatically increasing capacity at our
automotive manufacturing facilities in China and
Hungary. We also opened new group of ces
and R&D facilities in both India and China.
