cOMMUniTY giVing
accountability to the community
Just as all nancial institutions struggled in this
economy, communities and non-prot organiza-
tions also saw their budgets squeezed and their
donations dwindle as times got tougher. Fifth
Third Bank was proud to be able to help make a
positive community impact through its charitable
foundation, Community Development Corporation
(CDC), and its employees.
In 1948, Fifth Third Bank became the rst nancial
institution in the U.S. to establish a charitable
foundation. Over the past 60 years, the seed money
of that foundation, along with the Bank’s continued
contributions, enabled the Foundation to make 200
grants in 2008. Those grants, worth $3.4 million,
went to deserving organizations throughout the
footprint in support of health and human services,
community development, education, and arts and
culture initiatives. Through the Foundation and
generous employee donations, the Bank once
again supported the United Way with funding of
$7.6 million.
The Bank also operated several programs to address
nancial illiteracy among youth and adults to help
them avoid nancial pitfalls and prepare them for
economic conditions such as those that exist today.
The Fifth Third Bank Young Bankers Club is the
Bank’s signature 10-week program that is taught to
fth-graders by employee volunteers in many of the
Bank’s markets. The Young Bankers Club reached
over 765 students in 2008 and expanded into
new afliates, including Fifth Third Bank (Central
Florida). The Bank also continued its popular eBus
tour throughout its market areas — taking a 40-
foot, Internet-equipped bus into communities to
provide one-on-one credit counseling.
The Fifth Third CDC provided capital to create
affordable housing, fund construction projects
that revitalize business districts and living areas,
and restore historic landmarks. In 2008, the CDC
invested $225 million to fund such projects that
make an immediate and long-lasting difference in
many of the communities the Bank serves.
Fifth Third Bank employees were the Bank’s best,
most active partners in making a difference in 2008.
Employee hard work and ingenuity strengthened
local non-prot boards and charity events. Their
volunteerism stretched the Foundation’s dollars
further. In addition, the Foundation augmented the
generosity of employees by matching their nancial
gifts to institutes of higher learning.
Fifth Third Bank, through its philanthropic arm, its
CDC, and its employees’ philanthropic activism, was
honored to do its part to support the community,
an effort that paid dividends for all who live and
work where the Bank operates.
The Young Bankers Club expanded to Fifth Third Bank
(Central Florida) in 2008. Pictured here is Jeff Keim, assistant
vice president and Commercial Relationship Manager, with
members of the graduating class from Nap Ford Charter
School in Orlando. Keim was one of six employee mentors
who taught financial literacy to 16 Nap Ford students.
